What is Opakwa?
This site is like Reddit, but private. Opakwa is more personal (every user is a referral), and your data and contributions won’t be federated or used or sold or leased or used to train the
next AI model.
Most importantly, Opakwa is a virtualized environment to build and experiment with intentional community. Every account requires administrator approval, and that means the decision to
include each member was intentional according to community norms.
Things you can expect here:
- Reddit-style discussion topics about:
- making / crafting things
- self/group reliance and safety
- intentional community as a concept and in practice (and all the forms it can take)
- mutual aid
- local happenings/news
- hobbies and other interests
- Community events, online and in person
- A venue to learn from and/or teach others
- A way to buy, sell, trade, or give away things to members of the community. We used to donate a lot and I would rather things go to someone here than to get flipped on Poshmark or Depop.
- Who else knows – part of the reason you’re reading this is because someone thought you could make a contribution.
Important things to know before applying
- This is an intentionally non-conformist community. Straight folk welcome, queer folks encouraged and protected.
- Political temperament begins at the US midpoint for “liberal” and go left from there. While we may discuss political issues or political ideologies, this is not a site about politics. We
will aggressively moderate political topics and prune membership as necessary.
- We may be open to partnering with you as part of a mutual aid / barter / trade relationship, but if you have voted Republican after 2022 please do not apply.
